Panhellenic Institute of Neurodegenerative Diseases

The scientific, cultural, educational institute under the name PANHELLENIC INSTITUTE OF NEURODEGENERATIVE DISEASES which resides in Thessaloniki aims for:

- Humanitarian, charitable, voluntary support of mental health and dementia in particular of those suffering from degenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s disease, Frontotemporal Dementia, Vascular Dementia, Dementia with Lewy bodies, Dementia in Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases).

- Scientific, professional training in the field of neurodegenerative diseases.

- Establishment and operation of Life-long Educational Centres in order for health professionals and other adult learners to be trained on mental health treatment, treatment and care of patients with neurodegenerative diseases and their families and other fields of general interest. The basic subject of interest of these Educational Centres is to provide professional training and education related to research, participation in conferences, educational skills, participation in integrated training programmes, distance learning, community initiatives, and promoting and supporting employment).

- Providing access and information about the scientific developments in mental health and neurodegenerative diseases

- Organising and participating in activities which contribute to the dissemination of information about mental health and dementia issues, in cooperation with local, community or other social organizations in Greece and abroad.

- Establishment of supporting and treatment centres, which will provide care and treatment with innovative methods of treatment for patients with neurodegenerative diseases.

- Development of knowledge on mental health and dementia.

Finally, the Panhellenic Institute of Neurodegenerative Diseases, since 2011, has been co-organising successfully every two years the Panhellenic Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease and the Mediterranean Conference on Neurodegenerative Diseases. The most recent conference took place on February 2021 virtually, which more than 3.200 persons attended them.

Also, the Panhellenic Institute of Neurodegenerative Diseases is planning to restart the operation of a Life-long Educational Centre for Neurodegenerative Diseases, thus enhancing the dissemination of recent knowledge on neurodegenerative diseases and bringing together important professionals in that field.

Ms Akyllina Despoti holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master’s degree in Clinical Neuropsychology-Cognitive Neuroscience at National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and Montreal Neurological Institute, McGill University. She holds a second Master’s in School Councelling and Guidance, from National and Kapodistrian University of Athens & University of Cyprus. She is a PhD candidate in Medical School of National and Kapodistrian University. Her doctoral research focuses on cognitive rehabilitation with Virtual Reality. She is a Lecturer in Aegean College, faculty of Psychology. She has worked with various patients with neurologic and psychiatric disorders in several hospitals in Athens. She has a CBT training from Beck Institute. Part of her research has been presented in scientific conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals.
